Merkwaardig geval van Hofmann's LSD-trip op een fiets
De Zwitserse vader van de psychedelische geneeskunde, Albert Hoffman, ging fietsen nadat hij de eerste man was die tripte op LSD. De dag van 1943 heeft voor altijd zijn belang in de geschiedenis gemarkeerd en 19 april wordt tot op heden gevierd als de dag van de fiets.
De uitvinding van LSD was gewoon een ongeluk. Hofmann werkte aan een verbinding die het zenuwstelsel zou stimuleren om een oplossing te vinden voor hoofdpijn en ademhalingsproblemen. LSD was niets anders dan het resultaat van een medisch experiment dat hij in 1938 uitvoerde. Na 5 jaar, toen hij zin had om dezelfde trip nog een keer te maken, herhaalde hij het experiment onwetend van de krachten ervan. Toen de LSD door zijn vingertoppen werd opgenomen tijdens het werken aan de verbinding, beschreef hij het als 'droomachtig' en niets dat in de buurt kwam van bedwelming. Om het daadwerkelijke effect van het product te begrijpen, probeerde hij het op zichzelf en rusten is een psychedelische geschiedenis.
Hij nam een dosis van 250 microgram, aangezien het een optimale drempel was, wat zeker niet zo is, nu weten we dat het niet meer dan 200 microgram zou moeten zijn. Binnen een uur na consumptie begon het zout te werken en begon hij in paniek te raken op zoek naar zijn auto waar hij vanwege de oorlog niet bij kon, daarom moest hij in plaats daarvan een fietstocht naar zijn huis maken. Vandaar de fietsdag!
Hofmann heeft in zijn boek geciteerd: “ Alles in mijn gezichtsveld wankelde en was vervormd alsof het in een gebogen spiegel werd gezien. Ik had ook het gevoel niet in staat te zijn om van de plek af te komen. Toch vertelde mijn assistent me later dat we erg snel waren gereisd.”
