Zoals aangegeven door wijlen buitengewone Terence McKenna, was de toegang tot en inname van hallucinogene paddenstoelen een ontwikkeling voor onze allesetende voorgangers die de mensheid het belangrijkste religieuze motief verschaften.
Volgens verschillende onderzoeken is ontdekt dat ongeveer 100.000 jaar geleden bepaalde homo sapiens begonnen met het consumeren van opzettelijk geselecteerde, geprepareerde wezens die psychedelische alkaloïden bevatten. Dit was de oorsprong van de stimulans voor het ontstaan van een veranderde staat van bewustzijn in onze soort.
Een van de vele mogelijke theorieën is dat uiteindelijk een religieuze liefde voor de grote oefeningen van de natuur uitgroeide tot een volledig geloof in een bovennatuurlijke kracht die het materiële universum organiseert en bezielt. Vanwege de hersenschors die individuen in staat stelden om buitenaardse gedachten te overwegen en ongelooflijke verhalen voor te stellen. Daarom kwam het geloof in zaken als magie, de geest en het eeuwige leven op de voorgrond. Sjamanistische verhalenvertellers begonnen zelfs verhalen te maken om belangrijke gelegenheden en ontmoetingen te beschrijven. Bepaalde bestemmingen werden ook als heilige plekken beschouwd en andere waren voor eeuwig verdoemd.
Hindoeïsme
De Indiase yogageleerde 'Patanjali' spreekt in zijn literatuur over de mystieke krachten die kunnen worden opgewekt door het gebruik van bepaalde 'genezende planten' of 'kruiden'. In latere literaire werken van 'Vyasa' zijn er meerdere vermeldingen van de elixers van de asura's 'demonen'. Adi Shankara beweert ook te hebben geweten van de Vedische drank genaamd 'Soma Ras'. Bovendien vermelden boeddhistische tantra's de nectar 'amrita' die tijdens rituelen werd gedronken en werd geassocieerd met de traditie van 'spirituele bedwelming'.
Christendom
Sommige denominaties keuren het gebruik van de meeste illegale drugs af, sommige laten matiging toe terwijl andere geen officieel standpunt hebben. Jezus en vele andere bijbelse figuren dronken wijn, de meeste christelijke denominaties vereisen geen geheelonthouding. In andere sekten wordt aangenomen dat wijn een vorm van bloed van Christus is.
Islam
Van de islam daarentegen is bekend dat het alle medicijnen verbiedt die niet medisch zijn voorgeschreven. De koran heeft verschillende verzen die expliciet drugs verbieden omdat ze je bewustzijnstoestand zullen veranderen en omdat ze je lichaam schaden.
Rastafari-beweging
Veel Rastafari's geloven dat cannabis, 'het kruid', 'Kaya' of 'Ganja' een heilig geschenk is van 'Jah'. Het kan worden gebruikt voor spirituele en psychologische doeleinden, maar mag niet worden gebruikt voor godslastering. Het gebruik van andere drugs zoals alcohol wordt afgekeurd. Velen in deze beweging geloven dat de wijn die Jezus consumeerde niet-alcoholisch van aard was.
