De Himalaya Char Dham Yatra
Het is nu meer dan een maand geleden dat Himalayan Char Dham Yatra is begonnen. Met de ceremoniële opening van de dwars(portalen) van Gangotri en Yamunotri wordt de Char Dham yatra geopend verklaard. Het gebeurt op de vrome gelegenheid van Akshay Tritiya. Temidden van de goddelijke omgeving met het zingen van Vedische hymnen en gebeden, klokken en instrumentenspel op de achtergrond, aanbidding van de godin Ganga en Yamuna. De portalen van Kedarnath en Badrinath gaan een paar dagen later open.
Beide godinnen, Ganga en Yamuna, komen samen met heer Kedarnath en Badrinath uit hun winterverblijf bij tempels in respectievelijk Mukhba, Kharsali, Ukhimath en Joshimath, wanneer het yatra-seizoen begint in de maand mei. In oktober-november, met het begin van de winter, wordt het seizoen ook afgelast en worden hun idolen naar hun winterverblijf gestuurd.
De Holy Char Dham begint van Yamunotri naar Gangotri en gaat dan verder naar Kedarnath en vervolgens naar Badrinath. Het trekt miljoenen toegewijden, niet alleen door het hele land, maar er vliegen ook veel mensen uit verschillende landen naar toe. Het yatra-seizoen voegt een maximumpercentage toe aan de inkomsten uit toerisme van de staat en levert ook een belangrijke bijdrage aan de economie. Het grootste deel van het levensonderhoud van de lokale bevolking hangt ervan af.
Yamunotri is een gletsjer van waaruit de rivier de Yamuna begint. Het bevindt zich op een hoogte van 3.293 meter boven de zeespiegel, bijna 30 km ten noorden van Uttarkashi. Als we de folklore mogen geloven, wassen mensen hun zonden af door gewoon een duik in de rivier te nemen, wat hen beschermt tegen een vroegtijdige en pijnlijke ondergang.
Volgens Puranas nam de godin Ganga de vorm aan van de Bhagirathi-rivier om de zonden van de voorouders van koning Bhagirath af te wassen, waarvoor zijn hele koninkrijk de prijs betaalde na zijn zware boetedoening. De stroom was zo snel en oncontroleerbaar dat Lord Shiva haar in zijn samengeklitte haar moest ophopen. Gangotri is een gletsjer van waaruit de rivier de Ganges ontspringt als Bhagirathi en Alaknanda ontmoet bij Sangam in Devprayag en Ganga wordt.
Een van de belangrijkste Chaar Dhams Badrinath is opgedragen aan Heer Vishnu. Als we de legendes mogen geloven toen Adi Shankaracharya het Saligram-idool van Lord Badrinath vond ondergedompeld in Alaknanda en het in een grot ergens in de buurt van Tapt Kund of de hete bron plaatste. Mensen geloven dat het genezende krachten heeft en het is gebruikelijk om een duik te nemen in Hot Spring voordat je de tempel betreedt.
Een van de Panch Kedars in Uttarakhand en twaalf Jyotirlingas in het hele land, Kedarnath is opgedragen aan Lord Shiva. Het is gelegen op een hoogte van 3.584 meter boven de zeespiegel. Volgens de overleveringen en legendes bouwde Adi Sankaracharya het in 8 na Christus. Het staat al eeuwen intact en de tsunami in de Himalaya van 2011 kon ook geen deuk op het gebouw achterlaten.
